Gwalior Tour and Travel Guide

Gwalior is one of major cities of Madhya Pradesh state of India. The city and its fortress have been ruled by several historic northern Indian kingdoms. From the Tomars in the 13th century, it was passed on to the Mughal Empire, then to the Maratha in 1754, followed by the Scindia in 18th century. Gwalior was the winter capital of Madhya Pradesh State and later on become a part of larger state of Madhya Pradesh. The Gwalior city is surmounted by rocky hill and on north side forms the border of Ganga-Yamuna Drainage Basin.

Gwalior was one of the major sites of revolution during the 1857 outbreak. Gwalior has now emerged as an important tourist attraction in Madhya Pradesh. It is a metropolitan city and surrounded by industrial and commercial zones of neighbouring districts. Suraj Sen a prince of the Gujar-pratihar clan of the eighth century, it is believed that he lost his way in forest and then he met an old man, the sage Gwalipa, whose influence almost took him by surprise. On asking the sage for some drinking water, he was led to a pond, where the waters not only satisfied his thirst but cured him of leprosy. Out of gratitiude the prince wished to offer the sage something in return, and the sage asked him to build a wall on the hill to protect the other sages from wild animals which often disturbed their yajnas . Suraj Sen later built a palace inside the fort, which was named "Gwalior" after the sage, and eventually the city that grew around the fort took the same name.
