Ramnagar Fort is located on the banks of River Ganga and located opposite to the Tulsi Ghat in Varanasi. The exquisite monument was built in 1750 by Kashi Naresh Raja Balwant Singh. The Fort was home to Kashi Naresh and his family in 18th century. At present the King of Kashi is Anant Narayan Singh and is also resident of Ramnagar Fort. During the monsoon time, Fort is accessible through boat ride across the River.
The construction of structure is done in Mughal Style of architecture with creamy-coloured Chunar sandstone. Fort is built on high level and consists of many carved balconies, large courtyards and pavilions. The massive Fort houses beautiful garden, Veda Vyasa Temple, king’s residential complex, Dakshin Mukhi Temple of Hanuman Ji, Durbar Hall, reception room, Saraswati Bhawan – museum with collection of American vintage cars, bejeweled sedan chairs, ivory work, medieval costumes, gold and silver brocaded royal Palakis.
An array of Ramayan episodes are played in Ramnagar Fort enhances its cultural beauty. In February and March a festival called Raj Mangal is celebrated in the fort with a procession of boats with people, dancing and singing starting from the Asi Ghat, goes along the river in front of the Fort.
